Antique Restoration

Antique restoration is the repair and maintenance of an antique carried out without compromising the integrity of the piece. Traditional techniques are used when repairing and restoring the antique. Throughout the process, care must be taken to utilize all the original parts of the piece, that are available. These materials should be used in both the repairs and the finish, whenever possible.

This Chippendale chair had a broken back. By using most of its original pieces and matching its original finish we were able to restore the antique  to its former splendour.

French Polishing

Acanthus is a company dedicated to preserving the time-honoured trade and tradition of French Polishing, which is an art form that has been passed down through the centuries by skilled Craftsmen.

This photograph shows a 17th century German Armoire.

This piece came to us with missing and damaged carving. The finish was dull and lifeless. We replaced the missing carved pieces and restored the original finish.

We are able to replicate original fabrication and finish on antiques.

This photograph shows a close up of an antique drawer to th left and the replicated veneer and inlay drawer to the right. The drawer was then French polished to match the original.

Here we have an original shield from an 18th century American war ship.

The clients wanted a replica made with the letter 'U' in the center. This first photograph shows the carved replica shield on the right.

This is the finished shield, which was gilded using traditional techniques of gesso, bole and gold leaf.

The center had a 'crackle' finish with the gesso showing through.
